OpenAI Believes Superhuman AI is Approaching and Wants to Create Tools to Control It 🌐🧠

OpenAI scientists might be on the verge of making an exponential leap in artificial intelligence (AI). While we're still trying to perfect human-like AIs, OpenAI is already planning how to handle superintelligent AI, a theoretical AI whose capabilities far surpass human intelligence. OpenAI's Superalignment team is not simply dreaming about this superintelligent future, but is actively developing ways to guide, regulate, and govern such AI systems. The goal here is to avoid what would seem to be the plot of a science fiction movie, where machines become so intelligent they rebel against their human creators. OpenAI is working on how a less intelligent system could control a smarter AI model to then guide it towards desired behaviors and away from undesirable ones.

The Superalignment team has been exploring methods to align superintelligent AI models, using weaker AI models to guide more advanced systems towards beneficial paths and away from harmful ones. According to Burns, a team member, they are looking at how they can "tell a model what to do and make sure it does it." It's a real supervisory challenge, but one of a kind we've never witnessed before.

However, it remains to be seen when and how the innovations of the Superalignment team will be applied. In the meantime, OpenAI plans to launch a $10 million grant program to encourage research in the field of AI Superalignment. Combined with its commitment to hold an academic conference on superalignment in 2025, OpenAI is working to ensure we're prepared to face the novel future of AI.

Even as we move towards a future with superintelligent AI, it's worth remembering that these advancements don't come without their own challenges. However, with institutions like OpenAI at the forefront researching and planning the control and regulation of superhuman AI, we can expect these fears to be well-founded and effective measures to be taken to address them in advance.

He speaks to us about the potential dangers this technology could present to humanity, echoing the warnings that venerable technologists (such as Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak), filmmakers, and even state leaders have raised over the past year. Francis urges the adoption of an international treaty to ensure the ethical development of AI to prevent falling into a "technological dictatorship". Quite a striking term, isn't it?

AI, after all, should contribute to peace and not catalyze conflicts and inequalities.

Pope Francis's conclusion has a bittersweet taste. Recognising the significant benefits that AI can bring, such as more efficient manufacturing, more accessible transportation and better-prepared markets, he is also aware of the danger of this technology benefitting only a small elite, at the expense of impoverishing many.

The bottom line is, Pope Francis's call resonates as a message of reflection and caution about how we confront progress and the technological revolution. It's a reminder that, once again, progress shouldn't merely be a figure or a line of code, but should be, above all, human. And, well, if those thoughts are coming directly from the Vatican, we probably should pay some extra attention. As if we're going to 'confess' in terms of technology, don't you think?
